Region

The northern tip of South Island has become New Zealand`s most important wine region since sheep farming and cherry orchards were first replaced with vineyard in the 1970s. Much of the land is alluvial river basin with well-drained soils that provide an ideal environment for pungent, grassy Sauvignon Blanc. Pinot Noir from the more suitable clay slopes and Pinot Gris are also proving world-beaters.

Producer

Named after the famous ship, The Astrolabe, which visited the Marlborough region in the 1800s with French explorer, Jules Dumont d`Urville at the helm, who discovered the regions` significant beauty and potential. Today its namesake has captured these qualities and created a distinctive range of wines. Nurturing the attributes of the soil, vine and climate and combining these with his minimalist approach in the winery, Simon Waghorn transforms the regions grapes into stylish and expressive wines. Already with a cult following, wines from Astrolabe offer excitement and exclusivity. One of New Zealands foremost award winning winemakers.

Tasting (Long)

This rare sub-regional Marlborough Sauvignon is sourced from a single vineyard planted on the limestone hills exposed to the coastal elements at Kekerengu, a small town 50 miles south of Blenheim. The wine shows lively aromas of currant leaf, gooseberry and lime. On the palate it is medium bodied yet dry with ripe plum and passionfruit and flinty, almost salty notes.

Tasting (Short)

A lively aromatic bouquet of blackcurrant leaf, gooseberry and lime, dry with ripe plum and passionfruit and flinty finish.

Food

Try with seared scallops, seafood risotto, asparagus with hollandaise sauce or grilled chicken.
