Region
The ancient kingdom of Navarra, partly Basque, nestles in the shadow of the Pyrenees to the north and east, and La Rioja to the west, with the main area around the `bull run town` of Pamplona. The region has made huge leaps in quality over recent years, producing exciting wines from a range of local and international grape varietals. With that in mind, it has the potential to rival its more famous neighbour.
Producer
Although the winery was established in Sesma in Navarra as recently as 1999, the family vineyards were planted by the Asensio brothers in the 1980s on limestone and gravel sites that benefit from both Atlantic and Mediterranean climatic influence. Javier Asensio took over the running of the winery and employed winemaker José Manuel Echeverria whose brilliant interpretation of Bordeaux varietals combined with the traditional Navarra Tempranillo grape, are exceptional.
Tasting (Long)
This Navarra blend is unusually powerful with the assertive black fruits of Cabernet Sauvignon combined with the expressive character of Tempranillo. Subtle vanilla, plum and spice aromas and intense summer red fruits on the palate. The wine is softened for a year in French oak barrels and further aged in bottle, softening the tannins and adding a distinct toasty finish.
Tasting (Short)
This wine has a powerful, expressive character, with vanilla, plum and spice aromas followed by intense summer fruit on the palate. Aging in American oak barrels and further in bottle results in softening the tannins and adding a distinct toasty finish.
Food
A good accompaniment to roast meats, lamb shanks and rich flavoured stews and cheeses.
