Region
With a varied geography, many different micro-climates and a vast array of grape varieties and viticultural traditions, it is not surprising that Italy can offer a full range of sparkling wine in all styles and quality. Perhaps the Spumante wines of Piedmont, centred around the town of Asti, are the best known? These are usually medium dry and sweet sparkling wines made by the tank method from Moscato grapes. The drier Prosecco Spumante is produced in the Veneto region from Prosecco grapes using the same tank or transfer method. A small addition of the red Raboso grape creates a rose Prosecco. The cooler Alpine regions are the source of Italy`s finer method traditional sparkling wines, often including blends of Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir. Tank fermented sparkling wines are produced in many other of Italy`s warmer regions.
Producer
The Bortolotti family has carefully selected a group of viticulturists within the Valdobbiadene appellation over the years, so that only grapes of the highest quality are vinified - all farmers practice organic methods of viticulture. The consortium of the appellation releases an agronomical bulletin to inform the viticulturists regarding the danger of diseases/ pests. Only organic fertilizers, copper and sulfur-based products are used for insect and disease control. In the majority of the vineyards, natural cover crops (grass cover) are left between the rows of vines to aid fertilization. SO2 is used within the limits of the Italian regulation to preserve the wines.
Tasting (Long)
Cultivation of Lagrein in Alto Adige usually results in the tannic red wines Lagrein Scuro, or Lagrein Dunkel, or the fragrant rosé wines Lagrein Rosato, or Lagrein Kretzer. Lagrein produces wine which has high acidity and low pH and Bortolotti have taken these qualities to produce a soft fruity sparkling wine, with hints of violet. A clear foam and perlage with a toasted almond aroma. Delicately balanced and light in acidity, this garnet coloured wine is a shining example of the quality you can expect from Bortolotti.
Tasting (Short)
A warm hue of rosé with a fine and delicate mousse. Light fruit with a hint of violets and a pleasing aftertaste of almonds.
Food
Lovely with summer salads with chicken or fish or with lobster thermidor.
