Region

The Gironde River gravel beds at Pauillac provide the ideal drainage and riverside micro-climate enjoyed by the dominant varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon. The Bages plateau is considered the finest environment for Cabernet grapes. Here the expression is richly concentrated blackcurrant and exotic, smoky fruit, which is softened with some Merlot and has added complexity with the minute addition of the dark inky Petit Verdot.

Producer

The name `Batailley` originates from the battles that took place during the 14th century on the plateau that gives access to nearby Chateau Latour. This is a superb Médoc Cru Classé property, well situated on gravelly soils in the famous commune of Pauillac. The chateau was restyled in the 18th century, surrounded by a 6 hectare park designed in the 19th century by Barillet-Deschamps, the landscape gardener to Napoleon III. Today, under the stewardship of Philippe Casteja (owners of Bordeaux merchant Borie Manoux), a recent programme of vineyard and cellar investment has lead to a huge leap in quality, whilst an astute commercial mind has ensured that this excellent Cru Classé still remains good value in terms of its neighbours.
