Region

The Languedoc is a vast region stretching across much of the south and Mediterranean and is France`s single largest vineyard entity for its Vins de Pays wines. Within the Languedoc lie several distinctly identified Vins de Pays (including the l`Aude, Gard and Hérault) and many generic appellations that maintain traditional local blends and wine styles such as Minervois, Corbières, Pic Saint Loup and Fitou.

Producer

The word Caunettes comes from the Latin Caonetta, meaning small cave. And the property is indeed by the Combe Obscure gorges where it enjoys an exceptional view over the Pyrenees. An age-old priory, Caunettes is also a vast estate that was planted with vines as early as the 18th century. Nicolas and Miren de Lorgeril took over the estate in 2000 and aim to restore it to its position of excellence in the Cabardès AOC.

Set on the sun-drenched hillsides of the Montagne Noire in the southern part of the Massif Central, with a view of the Pyrenees, Château de Caunettes is right in the heart of the Cabardès AOC. This is the westernmost AOC in the Languedoc, the easternmost in south-west France and the only appellation to use equal proportions of Atlantic grape varieties (Merlot, Cabernet) and those of the Mediterranean (Syrah, Grenache).

Tasting (Long)

The Chateau de Caunettes is located on chalk and limestone hills dotted with natural caves and surrounded by vineyard and wild garrigue landscape. Here the south west meets Languedoc and the wine combines the grape varieties and styles of each. A nose of dark fruits is powered by Cabernet and Merlot with Syrah and Malbec adding a note of spice followed by rich fruits supported by a fine tannic structure.
