Region

The combination of sand and gravel soils found in this area of southern Médoc are ideal to support both Cabernet Sauvignon and a high proportion of Merlot. The Margaux appellation always produces wines with a fragrant bouquet, supple texture and feminine softness.

Producer

The prestigious history of Brane-Cantenac though, is not linked to a personality or a family but to its incomparable soil, which has been carefully studied over the years by top specialists. Recognised throughout the estate’s history as one of the finest in the Médoc, Brane’s terroir long gave the estate its unofficial ranking as ‘first of the seconds’. The heart of the estate is an unbroken block of 45 hectares, which has remained unchanged for three centuries.

Henri Lurton chose to centre the First Wine of Brane-Cantenac on this original 45 hectare terroir. The expansion of the vineyard during the 19th and 20th centuries, however, was effected especially through purchasing new plots from classed growth neighbours (Margaux, Kirwan, Issan, Cantenac-Brown), which ensured that the whole of the production of Brane’s 1st and 2nd wines would be of very high quality.

Tasting (Long)

One of the stars of the appellation in this vintage. Owner Henri Lurton was one of the few to pick Cabernet early and in this hot year it proved to be a stroke of genius giving the wine a marvellous restrained elegance. This is a stunning Margaux with a bouquet of sweet ripe blackcurrant, herbs and cedar and a lovely chocolatey edge. Vibrant, rich raspberry and plum flavours on the palate, which is gentle and appealing, finishing with hints of oak and beautiful refined flavours. A fantastic expression of top cru classe claret
