Region

Margaret River is Western Australia`s premier and fashionable vineyard region. Situated along the coast three hours south of Perth, this picturesque region is exposed to the effects of the Indian Ocean currents. Margaret River is reknowned for producing Australia`s premier cool climate wines. Ultra chic and trendy, most producers are high quality, small and boutique with an emphasis on Sauvignon Blanc, Semilion and Chardonnay for whites and the classic Bordeaux red varietals of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. This region has received much critical acclaim from journalists and afficienados of the wine industry. A region already established as one of Australia`s finest, but still young in global terms, there is still much potential to be unleashed.

Producer

The Hamelin Bay winery is located at Karridale in the southern point of the region within a few miles of the ocean. The 63 acre `Five Ashes Vineyard` is located on well drained gravel soils and faces north across the valley to gain the suns` warmth in this cool region. The wines themselves are an expression of the natural beauty and uniqueness of the area, the fruit ripens with an intensity of flavour and richness of character. Owned by the Drake-Brockman family, who have a long association with the area, they have in recent years, achieved great recognition and awards for their range of outstanding wines.

Tasting (Long)

The Karridale area is fast developing a reputation for superb refined Shiraz. Selected bunches of grapes are hand-picked and then `open top fermented` before the final juice is then aged in a combination of the best French and American oak barrels. This is hand made to show off the best wine that Hamelin Bay can produce. Aromas of smoky white pepper, menthol and chocolate boysenberry are melded with clove spice derived from perfectly matched oak. Restrained and tight knit, the palate is built to age with excellent intensity and focuses around the mid palate, with a great persistence of flavour and finish.

Tasting (Short)

This is hand made to show off the best wine that Hamelin Bay can produce, aromas of smokey white pepper, chocolate boysenberry and clove spice combine beautifully with a full flavoured finish and excellent intensity on the palate.

Food

Serve with venison, pheasant, jugged hare and spicy curries.
