Region
Touraine, as a region, includes the spectrum of wines from fresh, well defined varietal Sauvignon Blanc, Gamay and Malbec to Vouvray. It offers dry, sweet and sparkling white wines made from Chenin Blanc and the regions of Chinon and Bourgueil for red and rosé. The red wines of Touraine are largely produced from Cabernet Franc. Recent warm vintages and improved viticultural practices have resulted in many surprisingly concentrated yet supple red wines.
Producer
Vigneron Jacky Marteau runs his 25 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc and Gamay vines according to the principles of `lutte raisonee`, or sustainable viticulture. His vineyards are planted on some of the finest sites in Touraine, on south facing pebble and flint slopes on the south bank of the Cher.
Tasting (Long)
Wine-maker and owner Jackie Marteau makes Gamay in the Loire with more depth and backbone than anything we`ve tasted recently from Beaujolais. This is real individual growers wine, hand picked and traditionally fermented after a maceration to extract a deep purple colour, it shows attractive pepper, mineral and licorice flavours and soft rounded tannins.
