Region

There are three distinct `terroirs` of St Emilion; limestone on the raised vineyard areas, clay more predominant on the slopes and gravel and clay combined on the plateau. This provides a diversity within the region as different sites support either Cabernet Franc or Merlot in general and can relay a distinct mineral character to the wine.

Producer

Owned by the Cassat family for 15 Generations since 1741 this historic property is called Ch Mauvezin. However the chateau has a 2nd label called Chateau Haut Badon . The vines are grown on this tiny vineyard of only 8 acres and have an average age of 50 years +. Here the Merlot and Cabernet grapes flourish on the clay and chalk soils of the St Emilion appellation. These soils are renowned for producing deep coloured, powerful and well structured reds that are stylish and traditional.

Tasting (Long)

The dominant Merlot grape gives the wines of Saint Emilion their smooth and luscious character whilst the Cabernet Franc adds some weight and complexity. This perfect blend produces a soft rich and blackcurranty red with complex, elegant flavours derived from oak barrel maturation. A pleasant nose with aromas of red berries and a smooth creamy texture gives this excellent Right Bank claret its class and elegance and the Grand Cru status is only bestowed on the best wines of the appellation. Generally these wines mature faster than the more structured wines from the Medoc, located further north where the Cabernet dominates.

Tasting (Short)

A perfect blend producing a soft rich and blackcurranty red with complex, elegant flavours derived from oak barrel maturation. A pleasant nose with aromas of red berries. A smooth, delicate and balanced wine, deep and bright in colour.

Food

Delicious with red meats, poultry and dry cheeses.
