Region

The word Champagne derives from Latin `campania`, or open countryside. However the exception is the area south of the city of Reims, where a group of low hills and valleys provide a unique micro climate, enabling the vine to grow on deep chalk soils. The vineyards of Champagne are planted in three distinct areas. The `Montagne de Reims` is predominately planted with Pinot Noir, the backbone to the Champagne blend, whilst Chardonnay is ideally suited to the chalky slopes of the `Cote de Blancs` south of the town of Epernay. Pinot Meunier dominates the `Vallee de la Marne`, an area susceptible to frosts, which it is more able to withstand, due to later budding. The secret of Champagne is in the blend, where wines from different grape varieties and vineyards are blended to achieve the `house style`.

Producer

The village of Mailly is situated in the heart of the Montagne de Reims, just south of the city of Reims. It is rated as one of the seventeen Grand Cru villages and Mailly has some 70 hectares of vineyards, planted with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Tom Stevenson, the authority on Champagne, in his recent annual Wine Report wrote that Mailly was one of the fastest improving Houses in the region, with winemaker Herve Dantan producing a consistent range of cuvees of excellent quality.

Tasting (Long)

This is a delightful salmon pink Champagne from an exceptional `mono cru` producer using 90% Pinot Noir grapes and 10% Chardonnay, only from the Grand Cru village of Mailly, just south of Reims. This prestige rosé is made by the technique known as `saignee` or bleeding of the juice rather than the simple addition of red wine used for the vast majority of rosé Champagnes. It has an elegant summer fruits bouquet followed by strawberry and mineral nuances on the palate. This is very fine rosé Champagne.

Tasting (Short)

This prestige rosé is made by the technique known as `saignee` or bleeding of the juice, from Pinot Noir grapes with a small addition of Chardonnay. It has an elegant summer fruits bouquet followed by strawberry and mineral nuances on the plate.
