Region
The vineyards of Beaujolais fall on the granite rich slopes of a hilly region between Mâcon and Lyon at the southern limit of Burgundy. The only vine variety authorised for red wines is Gamay, traditionally grown as free standing bush vines. A small amount of Chardonnay is also grown. The most favourable vineyard sites produce `villages` wines, and the 10 named `Cru` villages of Beaujolais represent the best vineyards of the region and produce the longest-lived and fullest style of Beaujolais.
Producer
Owned by the very talented winemaker Jean-Paul Dubost and produced from a collection of vineyards inherited from other family members. These richly concentrated `Cru` Beaujolais of Domaine Dubost reflect the distinct vineyard character and potential of Beaujolais. From Brouilly, the `Bruyere vineyard` is planted on a combination of mineral rich granite and schist soils which influence the wines complexity. The Morgon from `la Ballofiere` comes from bush vines grown on granite soils, whilst the Fleurie is on lighter soils. His wines are listed on most of the top gastronomic restaurants in Burgundy.
Tasting (Long)
Morgon is located in the middle of the 10 `Cru` villages of Beaujolais, the best vineyards of the region. It is often the longest-lived and fullest style of these red wines. Produced from the Gamay grape, the vines being planted on a combination of mineral rich granite and black schist soils, which give body and a wild cherry character. Jean-Paul Dubost makes ripe, supple Morgon with red fruits and rounded tannins, it shows exceptional concentration from low yielding 70 year old Gamay vines. His wines are listed in most of the finest Michelin rated restaurants in France where he has a dedicated following.
