Region

The region of La Rioja lends its name to Spain`s most widely recognised wines. Much Rioja is blended from three districts; Alta and Alevesa to the north and the hot dry Baja district to the south, and uses Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo red grape varieties and the diminishing influence of extended aging in oak barrels.

Producer

The origins of the Bodegas can be traced back to 1848, when the Marques, Luciano de Murrieta travelled to Bordeaux to learn the art of winemaking. However it was not until 1878 that he purchased the Ygay estate, situated close to the city of Logrono. Today the business is still in family control, owning some 300 hectares of vineyards in the Rioja Alta.

Tasting (Long)

The Gran Reserva is selected from the finest Tempranillo, Garnacha and Mazuelo vines from the greatest vintages only and softened by upto four years age in oak casks. Deep ruby red in colour with brown tinges. Complex and spicy aromas mingle with hints of roasted oak and ripened fruit. Velvety in the mouth with silky tannins and a long finish. A sublime example of traditional winemaking from the greatest family owned wine estate in Rioja. Fantastic stuff
