Region

Located in South Australia on the coast due south of Adelaide, the development of vineyard land in Southern Fleurieu is relatively recent, given impetus by the search for cooler areas. The maritime climate of the Southern Fleurieu Peninsula benefits from its exposure to the southern ocean breezes and its significantly cooler than its famous neighbour, the McLaren Vale wine growing area. Therefore this coastal land has lower alcohol levels and naturally higher acidity, making it a good source of grapes for classic sparkling wines and elegant yet well defined Shiraz, Viognier and Pinot Noir. A new region that is gaining momentum and much acclaim. One to watch

Producer

Situated 250 metres above sea level and comprising 80 acres of vineyards, this estate enjoys the viticultural skills of Steve Bragato and the winemaking talents of Linda Domas. In 1802 French explorer Nicholas Baudin, aboard the ship `Le Geographe` named the Fleurieu Peninsula in honour of his sponsor Charles de Fleurieu, one of Napoleon’s ministers. The word `parri` was used by the Kaurna people, the traditional owners of the land in Southern Fleurieu, to describe the rivers, creeks and gullies that are part of the geography. The estate was founded by the Phillips family in 1998, planting vines in the area between Mt Compass and Victor Harbour, just south of Adelaide.

Tasting (Long)

Picked from very low yielding parcels, the Shiraz was harvested from the Ironstone Block and the Viognier hand picked from the Misty Block. This fashionable blend shows the elegant character of cool climate Shiraz along with the lifted subtle influence of the Viognier creating an intriguing trend setting red wine with excellent colour. Aromas of rhubarb, red cherry and pepper are evident, followed by red currants and a hint of cinnamon on the palate.
