The region, following the Rhône River as it flows south of Lyon, is suited to the Syrah variety for the great red wines of Crozes Hermitage and St Joseph, whilst the often perfumed and powerful white wines are made from the fragrant Viognier of Condrieu and the complex Marsanne and Roussanne blends created in the rare whites of Hermitage, Crozes and St Joseph.
Businessman and winemaker Rene Rostaing has parcelled together almost 20 plots of vineyard in Cote Rotie with vineyard sites in La Landonne, La Vialliere and Cote Blonde, each possessing its own distinct characteristics. He has also mastered the neighouring appellation of Condrieu, produced from the rare and fragrant Viognier grape variety.
In 1996 Rene purchased a small estate in the Languedoc. It`s 12ha of limestone garrigue are planted with red and white Rhone varieties, traditionally vinified with maticulous care from low yields.
Les Lezardes is a small plot of 0.50ha of old Viognier vines, which was part of the Condrieu appellation 15 years ago, but is now classified as vin de pays des collines rhodaniennes. The broken down granite soils, similar to those of Condrieu, produce immensely fragrant Viognier, rich with the captivating scent of white blossom, peach and apricot. It is richly exotic with mouthfulling white peach and a long honeysuckle finish.
