Touraine, as a region, includes the spectrum of wines from fresh, well defined varietal Sauvignon Blanc, Gamay and Malbec to Vouvray. It offers dry, sweet and sparkling white wines made from Chenin Blanc and the regions of Chinon and Bourgueil for red and rosé. The red wines of Touraine are largely produced from Cabernet Franc. Recent warm vintages and improved viticultural practices have resulted in many surprisingly concentrated yet supple red wines.
Thierry Amirault studied at Beaune before setting up this estate at the heart of St Nicolas de Bourgueil, in Touraine. Today the Domaine has some 25 hectares of vines, with Cabernet Franc now joined by just over a hectare of Chenin Blanc, planted on gravel and siliceous soils that trap the heat of the sun.
This exceptional red wine from Touraine is made from 30 year old Cabernet Franc vines grown on gravel soils in a warm micro-climate. It has been aged on the lees in Burgundy casks for a year to bring roundness and subtlety. The colour is an unexpectedly deep purple, and the bouquet combines black fruits and spice. This ripe and full bodied Cabernet Franc shows the special intense character of old vines, powerful, rich palate balanced by subtle oak and soft tannins and a satisfying finish of lingering autumn fruit.
