Region

Pfalz region of southern Germany is warmer than the Mosel and ripens a wider variety of varietals. Its wines tend to be fuller in weight and intensity than most German wine. It is planted with Riesling, Muller Thurgau and increasing amounts of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Producer

Seemingly eccentric Dr Ernst Loosen`s passion and enthusiasm for his wines is only matched by his large personality. He originally appeared on the Jancis Robinson Wine course on BBC TV and was a huge success with televison audiences. As well as his eponymous estate in Pfalz he owns an estate in Bernkastel and is involved in a joint venture with Chateau Sainte Michelle in Washington State. The Pfalz vineyards are located around the Mittlehardt and his Pinot Gris from here has QbA status, that is to say the first level on the German quality scale.

Tasting (Long)

Seemingly eccentric Dr Ernst Loosen’s passion and enthusiasm for his wines is only matched by his large personality. He originally appeared on the Jancis Robinson Wine course on BBC TV and was a huge success with televison audiences. Pale gold, there are rich aromas of ripe apples and pears, a touch of honey and an underlying but apparent minerality. Lovely depth of fruit in the mouth giving richness and roundness without too much alchohol. The acidity of this wine is perfectly balanced with the slight softening sweetness and the weight of rich ripe Pinot Gris fruit.

Tasting (Short)

Produced by the world class Dr Ernst Loosen. Pale gold, there are rich aromas of ripe apples and pears, a touch of honey and an underlying but apparent minerality. Lovely depth of fruit in the mouth giving richness and roundness without too much alchohol.

Food

A lovely aperitif it goes well with light fish starters, grilled chicken or onion tarte.
